Spring Walleye Fishing Patterns
Ice-Out Stage (Late March - Early April)
First open water = walleyes stack at river mouths and inlet creeks. Water temp 38-44°F. Use 1/4 oz jig + minnow vertical. Top river spots: Mississippi pools 3-4, Wolf River, Rainy River.
Pre-Spawn (Early-Mid April)
Water 42-48°F. Walleyes stage on the deepest break adjacent to spawning reefs. Slow drag jigs + leeches. Fish are HUNGRY before spawn.
Spawn Window (Mid April - Early May)
Water 44-50°F. Most lakes CLOSED — check regs. Open water river systems still fish. Males stay on reefs 10+ days.
Post-Spawn Scatter (Mid May)
Toughest 2 weeks of the year. Females recovering at first deep break. Slow + small + close to spawn reef.
Top Spring Lakes
Lake of the Woods (long ice + sturgeon), Mississippi pools, Devils Lake, Lake Vermilion. Iowa Great Lakes (Okoboji, Spirit) start 2 weeks ahead.
