When Do Walleye Spawn?

Temperature Trigger

Walleye spawn when water hits 42–50°F. They prefer 44–48°F for peak activity. Surface temp = trigger; gravel + rock bottom + current = location.

Midwest Timing

Iowa lakes: late March – early April. Southern Minnesota + Wisconsin: April 1 – April 20. Northern Minnesota + Dakotas: April 20 – May 15. Watch surface temp, not the calendar.

How the Spawn Works

Males arrive at spawning reefs FIRST and stay 10 days. Females spawn in 48 hours then leave. Hit the reefs at dusk through dawn. 1/4 oz jig + fathead minnow on the rocks.

The Two-Night Window

Females spawn over 1–2 nights then move to recovery flats. The bite during the spawn itself is unreliable — but pre-spawn (water 38–42°F) and post-spawn (water 52–58°F) bites are the best of the year.

Most Lakes Have Spawn Closures

Many Midwest states close walleye season during the spawn (April 1 – mid-May). Check your state's regulations — the open river systems often stay open.
