Walleye Wranglers / 🐟 Speed-Trolling Crankbaits

🐟 Speed-Trolling Crankbaits

When walleye scatter, speed-trolling cranks finds them faster than any other tactic. Master speed, dive depth, and color.

Why speed-trolling cranks works

When walleye are spread across miles of flat or main basin, you need to cover water FAST. A bottom-bouncer + crawler is too slow at 1 mph — speed-trolling cranks at 2-3 mph triggers reaction strikes from active fish you'd otherwise pass over.

Choosing the crank

Deep-divers (15-25 ft): Reef Runner, Berkley Flicker Shad Deep. Mid-divers (8-15 ft): Rapala Shad Rap, Berkley Flicker Shad. Shallow divers (3-8 ft): Rapala Husky Jerk, Rebel Wee-R.

Trolling speed for cranks

2-3 mph is the cranking sweet spot. Slower in cold water (1.5 mph), faster in warm (2.5-3 mph). Each crank has its own ideal speed — test until you feel max wobble.

Dive depth + lead length

Each crank has a published dive depth at 100 ft of line out. To go deeper, let out more line. To go shallower, reel some back. Use a Precision Trolling guide or trolling app to dial exact depth.

Color sequence

Start with natural shad/perch. If no strikes in 20 min, switch to chartreuse or fire-tiger. If still nothing, try a black/silver. Cycle colors every 20-30 min until you find what's working that day.

Planer boards

Once you find the depth and speed pattern, use planer boards to spread baits and cover more water. Board on each side = 4 lures across 60 ft of width. Multiplies coverage.

FAQ

What speed should I troll for walleye?

2-3 mph for cranks. Slower (1.5) in cold water, faster (2.5-3) in warm. Each crank has its own ideal — test until you feel maximum wobble.

Best walleye crankbait?

Deep-divers like Reef Runner and Berkley Flicker Shad Deep dominate big water. Mid-divers like the Shad Rap and Flicker Shad work weed edges. Match dive depth to fish location.

How long a lead for trolling walleye cranks?

Use the published dive depth chart for each crank (usually printed on the box or on Precision Trolling tables). Start with the chart, then adjust if you're snagging or never touching bottom.
