📡 Live-Scope Walleye Fishing

Forward-facing sonar (Garmin LiveScope, Lowrance ActiveTarget, Humminbird MEGA Live) changed walleye fishing. Master the screen, the throw, and the pause.

What live-scope shows you

Real-time sonar in any direction your transducer points. You see walleye, baitfish, and structure — and watch your lure approach them in real-time. Best for suspended walleye, deep humps, and pressured fish.

Reading the cone

Most live-scope cones are 20° wide. At 20 ft depth, you're seeing a 7 ft circle. Pan the transducer to scan — don't just point one direction. Walleye are often AROUND structure, not on it.

Setting up your shot

When you mark a walleye 20-30 ft out, cast PAST it and bring the lure back through. Twitch as the lure enters its zone. Watch the walleye on screen — it will react before it bites.

Best lures for live-scoping

Hair jigs (3/8 oz) with twitch-pause. Suspending jerk baits. Swimbaits on 1/4 oz jig. Anything you can manipulate to get reactions out of a watching fish.

When walleye won't commit

If a walleye watches your lure but doesn't bite: change colors, slow down, OR change lure entirely. Many anglers throw the same lure 5x — change after 2 attempts. Pressured fish need novelty.

Range and limits

Live-scope is great to ~50 ft range. Beyond that, fish detail blurs. For deep walleye (40+ ft), traditional sonar 'down' view often works better than forward.

FAQ

Is live-scope worth it for walleye?

Yes — if you fish suspended walleye or deep humps. Changes the game on tough lakes. Not necessary for shallow weed-edge fishing where a jig works regardless.

How far does live-scope see?

20-30 ft of high-detail range. Up to 50 ft for general marking. Beyond that, fish detail blurs. Use traditional sonar for very deep marking.

Best live-scope lure for walleye?

Hair jigs (3/8 oz) with a twitch-pause cadence. Suspending jerk baits work too. Anything you can manipulate to provoke reaction strikes from watching fish.
