Where to fish Lake Oahe

Spring

Walleye stage off main-river points and creek arms. Cast jigs and slow-roll swimbaits on gravel 8-18 ft. Below the dam can be lights-out in April.

Summer

Thermocline forms 20-35 ft. Troll crawler harnesses on deep edges or bottom-bounce with leeches. Smelt are the forage — match the size.

Fall

Big fish stage on main basin transitions. Cast jerk baits and slow-roll big jigs at dawn and dusk. October is trophy month.

Winter

Ice walleye on rocky structure in 12-25 ft. Spoons + minnow heads. Move often.

Regulations: Daily limit: 4 walleye. No size minimum on most waters. Check SD GFP regs for special areas.
Local tip: Smelt are the dominant forage — match your bait to current smelt size (usually 4-6 inches). Use larger profile baits than you would in a typical Midwest lake.
