Trolling Speed for Walleye by Water Temp
Under 50°F: 0.7–1.0 mph
Cold-water walleyes won't chase. Slow speed lets them ambush. Lindy rigs and slow crankbaits.
50–58°F: 1.0–1.5 mph
Spring + early summer. Walleyes are getting active. Crankbaits + worm harnesses at 1.2 mph.
58–68°F: 1.5–2.0 mph
Prime summer pattern. Spinner rigs + crawlers at 1.4 mph for searching. Crankbaits at 1.8 for active fish.
Over 68°F: 2.0–2.8 mph
Hot water = aggressive fish. Trolling shad-pattern crankbaits at 2.3 mph triggers reaction strikes.
Cold Front Adjustment
Slow down 30% after a cold front passes. If you were trolling 1.5 mph, drop to 1.0 mph for 24–48 hours.
