Fluorocarbon vs Monofilament for Walleye

Fluorocarbon = Less Visible

Fluorocarbon refracts light at the same angle as water โ€” it visually disappears. Mono refracts light differently and walleyes in clear water can see it.

Clear-Water Lakes: Use Fluoro

Lake Vermilion, Lake Geneva, West Okoboji, Lake Mendota โ€” gin-clear water. Use 6 lb fluoro leader between jig and main line. 8 lb mainline mono is fine.

Stained Lakes: Mono is Fine

Lake Winnebago, Petenwell, Devils Lake โ€” stained or muddy. Walleyes hunt by lateral line, not sight. Mono works. Save money.

Sensitivity Tradeoff

Fluoro stretches less than mono โ€” better bite detection. Mono has more stretch which forgives heavy hooksets.

Recommendation

Mainline: 8โ€“10 lb mono. Leader: 6 lb fluoro in clear water, 10 lb mono in stained. Tie a Palomar knot between.
