Where Do Walleye Go in Winter

Deep + Stable Locations

Once ice forms, walleyes hold on the deepest stable structure: main-lake basins 22โ€“35 ft, mid-lake mud flats, drop-off edges. They're slow but not dormant.

First Ice (Late Nov โ€“ Early Jan)

Walleyes are still active. Hit shallower spots first ice: 14โ€“22 ft mud-rock transitions. Tip-ups with shiners catch better than jigs.

Mid-Winter (Jan โ€“ Feb)

The slowest period. Walleyes move to deepest basins 28โ€“35 ft. Use a #5 jigging spoon with a minnow head, dropped slow. Bite at dusk.

Late Ice (March)

Pre-spawn walleyes start moving shallower toward eventual spawn reefs. 18โ€“25 ft on the breaks. Best bite of the ice season.

Top Ice Lakes

Lake of the Woods (massive), Mille Lacs, Devils Lake, Leech Lake, Upper Red Lake. All produce trophy walleyes through the ice.
